Common Grounds: Story / Heritage
Since 2014, FOTODOK and Casco Art Institute: Working for the Commons have been sharing the same building in the heart of Utrecht at Lange Nieuwstraat 7 in Abraham Dolehof. In 2020, we teamed up to reflect on the history and development of this ground. As the result of the collaborative effort, we are pleased to announce a co-produced exhibition programme. Common Grounds: Story / Heritage unfolds over several chapters, gradually bringing more and more artists and contributions into the narrative. In response to the Covid-19 crisis, chapter two to four will be presented in other forms outside of the exhibition spaces. Visit casco.art/program for more information.
The first chapter is dedicated to the history of Lange Nieuwstraat 7. The fundament of this exploration is the work of Bart Lunenburg who created upon the invitation of FOTODOK a research-based multi-media installation shedding light on the past lives of the building titled This Creaking Floor and All the Ceilings Below. Intermingled throughout the building, various other actors, scenes and conversations present stories about this specific location. The following chapters spotlight everyday realities and the future of the building as well as the relations of different makers, institutions and neighbours with the space. Additionally to Lunenburg’s ongoing installation, new artists and contributors invited by Casco, such as Jumana Emil Abboud and Kanitha Tith, enter the programme.
