Common Grounds: Story / Heritage
6 March – 14 June 2020
Since 2014, FOTODOK and Casco Art Institute: Working for the Commons have been sharing the same building in the heart of Utrecht at Lange Nieuwstraat 7 in Abraham Dolehof. In 2020, we teamed up to reflect on the history and development of this ground. As the result of the collaborative effort, we are pleased to announce a co-produced exhibition programme evolving from 6 March through 14 June. Common Grounds: Story / Heritage unfolds over several chapters in the coming months, gradually bringing more and more artists and contributions into the narrative. The space transforms, and we search for ways an exhibition can be a story-telling device for many, in all their differences.
The first chapter is dedicated to the history of Lange Nieuwstraat 7. The fundament of this exploration is the work of Bart Lunenburg who created upon the invitation of FOTODOK a research-based multi-media installation shedding light on the past lives of the building titled This Creaking Floor and All the Ceilings Below. Intermingled throughout the building, various other actors, scenes and conversations present stories about this specific location. The following chapters, opening on the 9th of April and the 1st of May, spotlight everyday realities and the future of the building as well as the relations of different makers, institutions and neighbours with the space. Additionally to Lunenburg’s ongoing installation, new artists and contributors invited by Casco, such as Jumana Emil Abboud and Kanitha Tith, enter and change the space.
The building “opens its doors” perhaps as never before to reveal research from the city archive, events embedded in the architecture, and memories of its past lives as reflected today.
More information about the upcoming chapters and discursive programme will follow.
Save the date of the opening of the first chapter of Common Grounds: Story / Heritage on Friday, 6 March, 18:00 – 21:00 at our common grounds, the Lange Nieuwstraat 7. Find more information about the work of Bart Lunenburg and Chapter 1: This Creaking Floor and All the Ceilings Below here.
