Description
Galleries, museums, art centres, and institutions have closed their doors and are moving from their physical spaces to digital platforms to share artworks. Does that mean we have to give up a physical presentation of our work? Or, on the contrary, face this new situation and take up the challenge?
FOTODOK Lighthouse 2020-2021 talents
Who are we?
We are the 10 participants of Lighthouse 2020-2021. A talent development program run by FOTODOK that aims to give visibility to emerging artists. FOTODOK is an international space for documentary photography based in Utrecht. Our group is nothing you have seen before – not only we have a shared interest in photography and are all creating new perspectives regarding urgent topics in society. We are all working on very different subjects like, for example, the colonial history of the Netherlands, the representation of Muslim women, the way the ordinary potato tells us more about who we are, and how hearing loss affects human communication during pandemics.
Our projects address different topics; however, we have a common urgent need to share our stories. Becoming movable statues is a dynamic final event for the Lighthouse program, and it gives us a chance to get out from behind the computer and connect with each other!
We’ve got an idea!

How? We will use the public space to reach a new audience for our work!
What? We have developed the concept of Becomingmovable statues: a one-day performative public intervention where we challenge ourselves to create wearable works and get out of our comfort zone to reach a new audience. Every participant will create a unique physical presentation of the artwork by transforming it into something carriable. We will turn two-dimensional photography work into three-dimensional wearable outfits! We recognise an important task to develop artistically and professionally, and we wish to create visibility for our projects and expand the networks even if it means getting out in the streets and claiming the audience’s hearts. We welcome a broad audience – from potato eaters, daughters, and construction workers to social activists, investors, and history enthusiasts.

Where? Becoming Movable Statues will take place in different public places in the city center of Utrecht. It is a site-specific event, meaning that every artist will choose a spot that suits their project and add new meanings to it. Of course, it is important for us to take into consideration the unpredictable conditions of the pandemic, so we will take all precautions needed to guarantee a safe and healthy experience for all of us! For those that cannot be there, we will live stream the hell out of it!
When? 12th June 2021.
Our group met just once in October, let us come together again and claim your hearts! To make this possible we ask you for your support!
