Four photobooks, four photographers and 15 min. of special stories per book: FOTODOK BOOKTALKS is the stage for stories from photobooks. In this live talk show documentary photographer Giya Makondo-Wills interviews the storytellers – photographers, designers and publishers. They will make you part of extraordinary stories on a variety of subjects.
Our guests are Bieke Depoorter, Ruben Lundgren, Rob Hornstra en Valeria Cherchi.

Ruben Lundgren | Flowers in the Mirror – A Reader
Ruben Lundgren investigates his position as both outsider and insider in China, and his long-standing fascination with facades and appearances.

Rob Hornstra | Plastic Sea, Perfect Storm
In southern Spain lies Europe’s largest vegetable garden: an endless sea of plastic greenhouses, visible even from space. Thanks to abundant sunshine and efficient water use, it supplies cheap vegetables and fruit to our supermarkets. But behind this efficiency lie the exploitation of migrants, inhumane living conditions, and ecological devastation. How long will Europe tolerate exploitation and ecological ruin—all for the sake of cheap produce?

Valeria Cherchi | 3,350 gr. Photographs and Letters on Obstetric Violence
19-10-1980 / 17-4-1981. A date of birth and a date of death, six months apart. Valeria Cherchi grew up seeing her own name engraved on a tombstone: the namesake was her older sister, who died after being declared healthy at birth. She weighed 3,350 gr.

Bieke Depoorter | The beds I slept in
Between 2008 and 2016, Magnum photographer Bieke Depoorter travelled through Russia, the United States, and Egypt, asking random people if she could spend the night in their homes. Day after day, different people prepared a bed for her – on air mattresses, couches, carpets, on the ground, in living rooms, or kitchens. A decade later, she happened upon the hundreds of images she had taken of these beds, which were never intended for publication, and wondered if she had been collecting evidence.
