Femke Rotteveel has been appointed as the new director of FOTODOK. She succeeds Femke Lutgerink and Hans van Rijsbergen, who previously led the organisation together. After eight years, Lutgerink will pursue other interests. Van Rijsbergen will focus on his own company, Firma Van Rijsbergen.
Femke Lutgerink founded FOTODOK with Rob Hornstra in 2008. FOTODOK is an international venue for documentary photography in Utrecht. It brings urgent, underexposed, compelling and socially engaged documentary stories to a broad local, national and global public. It does this through a varied programme of exhibitions, lectures and debates, education and international collaboration. Prior to joining FOTODOK, new director Femke Rotteveel worked at World Press Photo and Dutch Postcode Lottery.
The power of photography
Femke Rotteveel: “ “I am delighted to be joining FOTODOK. I strongly believe in the power of imagination. In these times of rapid change, we need imagination more than ever in order to envisage the future and help us to make important decisions. Photographers and visual storytellers are uniquely positioned to highlight pressing social issues and to capture them from different angles. Over the years, FOTODOK has initiated numerous exciting exhibitions and projects that deserve a wide audience.”
Of her predecessor, Rotteveel says: “From the start, Femke Lutgerink has put her heart and soul into FOTODOK and made it the professional and energetic organisation it is today. I am honoured to succeed her and Hans van Rijsbergen. Together with the fantastic team they assembled, we will continue what they started.” FOTODOK will say a festive farewell to Lutgerink on 17 March.
