Maak kennis met het eerste fotoboek gepubliceerd door FOTODOK!
‘Pass It On. Private Stories, Public Histories’ is het vervolg van de gelijknamige tentoonstelling die plaatsvond bij FOTODOK van november 2020 tot en met februari 2021. Aangezien de show voor het grootste gedeelte was gepland tijdens een lockdown, is FOTODOK op zoek gegaan naar alternatieve manieren om deze tentoonstelling aan ons publiek te tonen. Zo hebben we een virtuele rondleiding gecreëerd waar onze bezoekers zich konden onderdompelen in een digitale ruimte. Tijdens dit proces hebben we ons ook bezig gehouden met een platform dat naast deze tour de broodnodige persoonlijke en tastbare ervaring van het werk mogelijk maakt. Met andere woorde—we hebben de tentoonstelling vertaald naar print.
VORMGEVING
Als je de show niet hebt kunnen bezoeken, kan deze nu naar jou afreizen. ‘Pass It On’ is een verzameling ongebonden materialen. Ze zijn zo gevouwen en samengevoegd dat ze lineair ‘gelezen’ kunnen worden, als een boek. Tegelijkertijd kan het materiaal uit elkaar gehaald worden en aan een muur gehangen worden, zodat je een privé tentoonstelling kan creëren in je huis of op je werkplek. Tijdens het ontwerpproces hebben we ook klimaatbewust gedacht over de uiteindelijke vorm van deze publicatie: de gezeefdrukte doos is zowel de omslag van het werk, als de verzendverpakking.
KUNSTENAARS
‘Pass It On’ geeft een inkijkje in vijf lopende fotografische projecten over familiearchieven. ‘A Garden Revisioned’ vertelt het verhaal van Inge Meijers wonderlijke ontdekking van honderden negatieven uit fotosessies ter ere van verlovingen, die ze vond op een verlaten trouwlocatie in Gwanju, Zuid-Korea. Lebohang Kganye’s ‘Ho thubeha ha lebone’ (Een breuk van het licht) heeft als vertrekpunt haar onderzoek naar de fotocollectie van haar familie en hun verleden in Zuid-Afrika tijdens de apartheid. In ‘Operation Detachment’ laat Marianne Ingleby zien wat zij van haar grootvader erfde—een archief met meer dan 500 foto’s die hij maakte als vrijwillig fotograaf voor het leger op Iwo Jima in 1945. Pablo Lerma maakte speciaal voor onze tentoonstelling ‘It Doesn’t Stop at Images’, een project waarvoor hij de archieven van IHLIA LGBTI Heritage induikt en alternatieve voorstellingen maakt van samengestelde queer families. Tot slot bevat deze publicatie ‘When Summer Became Winter’ van Yara Jimmink, een project dat later dit jaar nog te zien zal zijn als een openluchttentoonstelling op het Domplein in Utrecht, waarin zij reflecteert op de documentatie die haar grootouders hebben gemaakt toen zij van Indonesië naar Nederland verhuisden.
SCHRIJVERS
In deze speelse uitgave hebben wij ook ruimte gecreëerd voor een aantal bijdragen van theoretici en curatoren. Emeritus hoogleraar aan de Universiteit Leiden en auteur van ‘Staging the Archive: Art and Photography in the Age of New Media’ Ernst van Alphen geeft een reflectie op het werk van Inge Meijer. Mariama Attah, conservator bij de Open Eye Gallery in Liverpool schrijft over Kganye. Senior Conservator Fotografie bij de Imperial War Museums in het Verenigd Koninkrijk, Hilary Roberts, deelt haar kijk op het project van Ingleby. Ook worden nieuwe inzichten gegeven in het werk van Lerma door de Phillip Leonian and Edith Rosenbaum Leonian conservator bij het Brooklyn Museum in New York, Drew Sawyer. Tot slot geeft historicus en onafhankelijk onderzoeker Sadiah Boonstra een reflectie op het werk van Jimmink.
GEZAMENLIJKE UITGAVE
FOTODOK werkte voor ‘Pass It On’ samen met een andere uitgever: METEØRØ EDITIONS, opgericht door Pablo Lerma. De vormgeving van het boek was een gezamenlijk proces en METEØRØ EDITIONS zal na de voorverkoop de verdere distributie verzorgen.

De lockdown heeft een impact gehad op ons allemaal en FOTODOK is hierin geen uitzondering. De fysieke tentoonstelling ‘Pass It On’ moest achter gesloten deuren blijven. Op dit moment willen wij, zonder al te veel te focussen op onze misgelopen inkomsten, er voornamelijk voor zorgen dat deze projecten, die zich iedere dag verder ontwikkelen, gezien worden. Deze publicatie is daarom voor ons een spannend, nieuw avontuur en een manier om te zoeken naar verbindingen, midden in deze tijd waarin we vooral afstand van elkaar houden.

Meet the first photobook to be published by FOTODOK!
‘Pass It On. Private Stories, Public Histories’ is a follow up to the exhibition of the same name, which took place at FOTODOK in November 2020–February 2021. As the show largely happened during a lockdown, FOTODOK wanted to find alternative ways to open it up to our audience. We created a virtual tour where visitors could immerse themselves in the digital space. We also developed a platform that would provide a much-needed personal and tactile experience of the works. In other words—we translated the exhibition into printed matter.
FORM
If you were unable to visit the show, it can now travel to you instead. ‘Pass It On’ is a collection of unbound materials. They are folded and brought together so that they can be “read” in a linear way, just like a book. But they can also be taken apart and placed on a wall, allowing you to enjoy a private exhibition at your own home or workspace. While deciding upon the publication’s form, we also considered the environment: a silkscreened box case is simultaneously the work’s cover and its mailing package.
ARTISTS
‘Pass It On’ presents five ongoing photographic projects that address family archives. ‘A Garden Revisioned’ is based on Inge Meijer’s unexpected discovery of hundreds of negatives from pre-wedding photoshoots at an abandoned wedding hall in Gwangju, South Korean. Lebohang Kganye’s ‘Ho thubeha ha lebone’ (A breakage of the light) is rooted in the artist’s research of her own family’s pictures and history in apartheid South Africa. ‘Operation Detachment’ by Marianne Ingleby deals with what she inherited from her grandfather—an archive of more than 500 images he made as a volunteer army photographer in Iwo Jima in 1945. Pablo Lerma initiated ‘It Doesn’t Stop at Images’ on the occasion of the show, and dove into the archives of IHLIA LGBTI Heritage, creating an alternative representation of a gay extended family. Finally, ‘When Summer Became Winter’ by Yara Jimmink, yet to be exhibited at Domplein, Utrecht, as an outdoor installation later in 2021, reflects on her grandparents’ documentation of their move from Indonesia to the Netherlands.
WRITERS
Although playfully designed, the publication includes thorough texts from a number of theorists and curators. Professor emeritus of Leiden University and the author of ‘Staging the Archive: Art and Photography in the Age of New Media’ Ernst van Alphen reflects on Meijer’s work. Curator of Open Eye Gallery, Liverpool, Mariama Attah writes on Kganye’s. Hilary Roberts, Senior Curator of Photography at Imperial War Museums, United Kingdom, writes about Ingleby’s project. The Phillip Leonian and Edith Rosenbaum Leonian Curator at the Brooklyn Museum, New York, Drew Sawyer looks into Lerma’s practice. And finally, Historian and Independent Curator Sadiah Boonstra deliberates on Jimmink’s series.

FOTODOK collaborates on ‘Pass It On’ with a co-publisher—METEØRØ EDITIONS, founded by Pablo Lerma. We searched for the book’s shape together, and after the pre-sale period is over, METEØRØ EDITIONS will take over the online distribution.

The lockdown was not easy. It impacted everyone, and FOTODOK is no exception. The physical exhibition ‘Pass It On’ stayed behind locked doors. Today, lost income aside, we want to make sure that the projects which develop and grow from day to day get to be seen.
