Together with Foundation Dialogue, FOTODOK provides the opportunity to a starting photographer to create a documentary around the theme ‘The New We’. The photographer receives an amount of 3000 euro to research the subject, realize the project and to present it. Read more here about the 2016 and 2017 winners.
Theme: The New We
We are democracy, health care system, neighborhood, our work, but we are also Facebook, Instagram and the algorithms that are used.
A transition is taking place; our whole society is in motion. Globalization and far reaching digitization are the drivers behind social development of man and society. We’re increasingly aware of the power structures that influence us on all kinds of levels. Our current social system with its economic inequality, populism and religious violence has had its day. Efficiency, control and individualism slowly make way for involvement, empathy and cooperation.
The self-evidence and omnipresence of these structures have allowed us not to be aware of the extent to which we are able to bring about change for a long time. Although society is always in motion, a new awareness is strongly on the rise: systems are not as unshakeable as they seemed to be. A good example is the lawsuit against the Dutch State that was filed by Urgenda Foundation, to enforce agreed climate policy.
The challenge is to look for new structures that do justice to the changing ideas on how we want to live with each other. Given facts are the structuring of our lives and the living in structures.
But form and content as such are variable. The boundary needs to be re-examined between our own influence and the self-regulating influence of the system or the power structures that determine the system.
This year the central question is: how do we relate to these systems?
How do you participate?
We invite you as starting photographer to send us your plan in which you describe your approach for a photo documentary. We’re looking for special and original perspectives you won’t find in the mainstream media, but you feel is a good interpretation of this important subject.
Please submit your plan to FOTODOK before June 11th, including a link to your portfolio and CV. FOTODOK, Stichting Dialoog and photo editor Jenny Smets (Vrij Nederland magazine) will evaluate the plans on content and feasibility. You should take into account an implementation period (from research to production) of four to five months. One plan will be selected to be produced.
You receive an amount of 3000 euro to produce and present your series. Of course we’ll advise and mentor you during the process. We’ll also discuss with you how the series can be used elsewhere and in what form. Possibly the work fits in our coming exhibition that runs from November 23 at FOTODOK.
Please contact lisanne@fotodok.org if you have any questions.
