With the Stipendium Dialoog, FOTODOK, Stichting Dialoog and Vrij Nederland collectively commit to aiding the development of young photographers and documentary stories. The theme of this third edition is related to the exhibition at FOTODOK that will be on view as of 23 November 2018, in which we search for new structures that honour the changing ideas of how we would like to coexist. The jury was unanimous in its choice to declare Marica Kolcheva the winner of the Stipendium Dialoog. On top of the 3000 € prize, she will be receiving any support needed to realise her project from the organisations involved. The starting photographer that won the Stipendium Dialoog 2018, will use her prize to continue to expand on her project proposal under the guidance of FOTODOK and Vrij Nederland.
The jury was unanimous in its choice for Marica Kolcheva. The central focus of her project proposal Metereologica is on the human relationship to weather. She looks at The New Us during a time in which human activitiy has a dominant influence on the environment, the climate and huge ecological changes are taking place: the Anthropocene. The tendency of human beings to want to control nature and its elements is, according to Kolcheva, expressed in weather forecasting. Metereologica charts the area in which science and magic meet by bringing together rituals, superstition, and new scientific experiments in her project proposal.
“We have to learn to see the Anthropocene, which is actually not a crisis, rather a permanent condition we live in. What kind of visual vocabulary do we need to see the world around us? How does technology shape the interactions in society? The New We requires new ways to see and to be seen.“
The jury was impressed by this intelligent proposal that was presented with care. The visual language is just as striking as the concept. The topic sheds an interesting light on The New Us: what makes us ‘us’ is the earth that connects, but also our hunger for control and power that may bring about the destruction of our living environment. The photographic sketches that are part of the proposal are of a (pseudo-)scientific nature. The material is diverse and intriguing. Kolcheva’s aim is to create awareness, discussion and to urge a corresponding responsibility. The jury is curious to see the development of the project and looks forward to seeing the process and result.
The jury – composed of Jenny Smets (Vrij Nederland), Friso Wiersum (Stichting Dialoog), Femke Rotteveel (FOTODOK) and Lisanne van Happen (FOTODOK) – wanted to honour a project with a strong concept and a curious and inquisitive stance of the creator. They were looking for a project that shows us ‘The New Us’, while simultaneously holding up a mirror to us and offering a perspective on the future. What was remarkable about this years submissions, was that all submitted project proposal came from women. The diversity of perspectives and the social commitment to the topics was strong.
