Lange Nieuwstraat: Visit our exhibition Beyond Us and Them about identity and group formation. How, as an individual, do we relate to others? Our individual identity plays a key role in whether or not we belong to a particular group. The exhibition brings together photographers and artists who explore the space between ‘us’ and ‘them’ and critically examine inclusion and exclusion.
Featuring work by: Terje Abusdal (NO), BeAnotherLab (international collective), Alexander Chekmenev (UA), Critical Mass (NL), Heather Dewey-Hagborg (US), Sanne van den Elzen (NL), Roos van Geffen (NL), Patricia Kaersenhout (NL), Amak Mahmoodian (IR), Alex Majoli (IT), Moniker (NL) and Gilleam Trapenberg (CW).
There is plenty going on around the exhibition as well. Talk to artists about their work and interact with pieces like Identity Match, an installation that confronts participants with their (un)conscious prejudices. Visual artist Roos van Geffen will also kick off her new project Chrooma, in which she identifies visitors to FOTODOK based on their skin colour. Would you like to take part in this live study? Then come along to FOTODOK on 3 September.
Janskerkhof: Art Utrecht will present contemporary visual art, will showcase the work of photographer Roos Pierson, whose web documentary Stories under the helmet portrays construction workers at Utrecht Centraal. We’ve seen them working on the station for years, but who are these people we barely nod hello to? Pierson gives us a glimpse of life in and around the Netherlands’ biggest construction site.
Other galleries and art spaces featured on Janskerkhof during the Uitfeest include Exbunker, KUUB space for art and culture, Grachtengalerie, Dapiran Art Project Space, SANAA gallery, Kunstliefde space for visual arts, Fotogalerie Utrecht and Stichting Art Utrecht. Janskerkhof is also the starting point for a walking route that takes in various Art Utrecht locations. www.artutrecht.com
