Detail
The sixth episode of Taferelen is an interactive ‘Hands on’ special. How can you make a difference & go beyond ‘us and them’? We form our sense of identity based on our relationships with others and our social environment. To understand ourselves, it is therefore important to understand ‘the other’ better and develop empathy for the situation and feelings of others. Language: English
This evening three different collectives will talk about this topic. BeAnotherLab is an international collective who raise the question, ‘If I could be you, would I understand myself better’? That’s why BeAnotherLab developed The Machine to be Another. Based on recent neuroscience research into ‘embodied experience’, the interactive installation allows you, with the help of virtual reality technology, to get inside someone else’s skin. See the world through the eyes of a refugee, a victim of racism or a transgender. During the exhibition, BeAnotherLab and FOTODOK will create new stories, which you can experience during Taferelen. The collective will talk about their experiences and the ideas behind the Machine To be Another. Feel free to ask them about the latest neuroscience research & ‘embodied experience’ and above all, experience it yourself! More information: http://www.themachinetobeanother.org/
Next are the Transketeers, a filmmaking and advocacy collective of three transmen based in Amsterdam; Bart Peters, Jonah Lamers and Chris Rijksen. The Transketeers have produced a range of audiovisual productions, and have been active speakers in public forums on (trans)gender diversity. During the Taferelen night we will be playing the so called ‘Privilege Bingo’. Based on a number of statements about, among other things, ethnicity, social hierarchy, gender and sexuality, the Transketeers will find out who in the group of bingo players has the most and who has the least privileges.

The last organization who will talk about their projects and ideas is the Voorkamer, a platform in Utrecht that promotes the different personalities and talents of people living in a refugee center, and acts as a tool for communication with the local society. What should a place that encourages cohesion be like? An important part of the method of the Voorkamer is that participants are seen as individuals, not only as a group. According to the Voorkamer this is a crucial step by creating new relationships, overcoming stigmatization and making known the diversity of people living in a refugee center. http://devoorkamer.org/nl/
We are very happy with our neighbors from Syr. They are taking care of the food for Taferelen. Syr is a place where local and new inhabitants of Utrecht meet and get to know each other. The restaurant is a social enterprise aiming to increase refugee participation in the Netherlands by offering them education and career opportunities. With this project new inhabitants can use their talents and further develop their skills, making them feel at home in Utrecht and take part in Dutch society. http://restaurantsyr.nl/en/
Come and join us! Learn more about an ideal form of communication, to encourage cohesion. Join us for a delicious diner, the Privilege Bingo and take the chance to get inside someone else’s skin.
