FOTODOK invites you to celebrate the end of the exhibition ‘Part of Me… Shaping Mental Spaces’ with us!
During the last show’s weekend we organise a get together.
On the 19th of November, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. some of the participating artists are present at the space and are open for one on one dialogues about their works. The bar is on, and Martine Derks and Nina 666 round up the evening with some singing!
In addition to that informal part, FOTODOK hosts a very special artist talk. At 12:00-13:30 p.m., Sharan Bala is presenting ‘I and Intersex and the medicalisation of the healthy body,’ followed by the Q&A by Mini Maxwell. Sharan Bala is an Amsterdam-born artist, documentary maker, and intersex activist, and, as she puts it, her “current work reflects on the medical institutions that medicalized the healthy intersex body.” During the artist talk, Sharan will discuss the subjects of intersex within art history, her artistic works, and her personal experience.
‘Part of Me… Shaping Mental Spaces’ introduced works of the makers who talk about the intersection between the mind, the body, and the society, and how how the experience of this intersection shapes the individual state. The moderator, a multidisciplinary artist and activist Mini Maxwell, will zoom in onto these ideas in Bala’s practice. Mini’s work is personal and political, and addresses social issues with a focus on the LGBTQIAP+ community. Mini has curated, among others, ‘Queer is not a Manifesto’ at Stedelijk Museum/Radio Radio; ‘Womxnsday’, a yearly event at De Vrankrijk; and Radical Queer Resistance Festival. ‘I and Intersex and the medicalisation of the healthy body’ takes place at Astare, across the street from FOTODOK, at Lange Nieuwstraat 10, and requires a reservation.
FOTODOK looks forward to seeing you on the 19th of November!
