Over the past few months, FOTODOK, in collaboration with Robin Schaap (student of the Reinwardt Academy), researched the current photography education in relation to the professional field. What are the needs, wishes and challenges of places for photography education in the Netherlands and for self-thaught photographers? How can FOTODOK contribute to fulfilling these wishes and needs?
For this we have initiated conversations with various art academies, vocational schools and self-taught artists. We talked about new developments in photography education, about financial challenges that the institutes are facing, about offering space and a community for alumni, about (the lack of) diversity and about the desire to connect students and new artists with each other and the professional field of photography.
This has resulted in a new exchange program in which the exchange and sharing of knowledge are key. October 5 we will start with this program. We will gather three times a year, in collaboration with educational partners and local parties from the field. We would like to thank Willem de Kooning Academy, St.Joost School of Art & Design, Royal Academy of Visual Arts, Utrecht School of the Arts, Nederlandse academie voor beeldcreatie, Sint Lucas and all others involved for their openness and involvement in the development of this program.
On October 5th, 2023 from 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM, the first meeting will take place at FOTODOK. We will start with a brief introduction from FOTODOK about this program. After that we will do speed dates so all artists can get to know each other a little bit better. There will be 3 guest speakers (all upcoming artists) coming from different educational backgrounds and we will have (vegan) dinner and drinks together organised by FOTODOK. We ask you to pay 5 euro to contribute to this dinner and for the drinks. You can also bring your own. Afterwards we will join the FOTODOK Book Talks in Tivoli Vredenburg together that will start at 8:00 PM and will end at 10.00 PM.
On February 2, 2024 from 10 AM to 5 PM we will travel to the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, where we will collaborate with Fotomuseum The Hague to create a nice program.
